Project Communitas

Project Communitas is a national project of the Canadian Council of Muslim Women (CCMW) which is funded by Public Safety Canada as part of the Kanishka Project. According to the Public Safety Canada website "The [Kanishka] Project is about better understanding what terrorism means in the Canadian context, how that is changing over time, and what we can do to support effective policies and programs to counter terrorism and violent extremism in Canada." CCMW will receive a contribution of $250,458 over three years for the Project Communitas. Kanishka was the name of the plane in the Air India bombing, one of the most devastating terrorist attacks in Canada's history. According to the Kanishka Project site: Project Communitas (Canadian Council on Muslim Women) This project aims to strengthen individual and community resilience through the development and evaluation of inter-cultural and inter-faith community-based projects that foster social interdependence, active citizenship, dialogue and youth leadership. At the community level, the emphasis on resilience will include focusing specifically on 1) threats of racial, political and religious extremism, and 2) physical attacks on one’s community. At the individual level, the focus will be on self-confidence, problem-solving and communication skills, relevant to the capacity to manage emotion during crises. The project will involve six cities/communities (Montreal, Ottawa, the Greater Toronto Area, London, Edmonton and Vancouver) and over 300 youth (ages 18-30) from across Canada. The Department will provide a contribution of $250,458 over three years. http://news.gc.ca/web/article-en.do?mthd=index&crtr.page=1&nid=852589 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/projectcommunitas Twitter: https://twitter.com/prjctcommunitas Articles in Muslim Link: Project Communitas Workshop on Community Resilience http://muslimlink.ca/news/blog/project-communitas-workshop Project Communitas: Building Resiliency in Canadian Muslim Communities http://muslimlink.ca/news/national/project-communitas-building-resiliency-in-canadian-muslim-communities
