New Documentary 'My Brother Soleiman' Explores An Afghan Canadian Family's Fight for Justice Against the Ontario Prison System
On December 15, 2016, Soleiman Faqiri tragically died after being fatally restrained during a severe schizophrenic episode while in an Ontario jail, where he was shackled on the floor, awaiting a much-needed mental health assessment that never came.
Through the lens of the Faqiri family, the film offers a poignant portrait of Soleiman—an athlete and promising engineering student—whose life was irreversibly altered by a schizophrenia diagnosis following a car accident. His devotion to his faith and his family shines through, particularly in his efforts to teach his mother how to read.
Determined to uncover the full truth and seek accountability, his brother Yusuf embarks on a long and emotional journey, awaiting a long-awaited coroner's inquest that promises to provide the crucial answers about what exactly transpired during Soleiman’s harrowing 11 days in confinement.
The documentary 'My Brother, Soleiman' follows Faqiri's brother, Yusuf, as he fights a 7-year campaign for truth and justice.
It centres around a coroner's inquest, which shows CCTV footage from inside the prison revealing Faqiri's final moments.
